30-Day Bhagavad Gita Study
Atman

Day 7

The Eternal Self

The soul is never born, nor does it die. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and ancient. It is not killed when the body is killed.

BG 2.20

Chapter 2 makes the Gita's boldest claim: you are not your body. The soul, called the atman in Sanskrit, meaning your true, unchanging self, never dies and was never born. Krishna is not just offering comfort here. He is stating a basic fact — one that makes it possible to act meaningfully in the world.

Reflection

Have you ever had a moment — even a glimpse — of being the observer rather than what is being observed? What was that like?

Today's Practice

Spend ten minutes today watching your thoughts without following them. Note: the watcher does not itself become the thought.
