30-Day Bhagavad Gita Study
Gunas

Day 21

The Three Gunas

Material nature is composed of three modes — goodness, passion, and ignorance. When the living entity comes in contact with nature, O Arjuna, it becomes conditioned by these modes.

BG 14.5

Chapter 14 introduces the three gunas, meaning qualities or strands, that make up everything in nature: tamas, meaning heaviness and inertia; rajas, meaning restlessness and craving; and sattva, meaning clarity and balance. These are not fixed personality traits. They are proportions that shift constantly inside you. The spiritual path moves step by step toward more sattva, and eventually beyond all three.

Reflection

Which guna has been most active in you this week — and what are the concrete signs of it in your behaviour?

Today's Practice

Today, identify one sattvic activity that reliably lifts your clarity and do it, even briefly, regardless of your current state.
