Day 14

Reward and Punishment

Chanakya's teaching on danda — the rod, meaning punishment — is not about being cruel. It's about being credible. A system with no real consequences slowly falls apart, as people keep pushing the limits. The hard part is getting the measure right: punishment that's too soft invites people to repeat the offense; punishment that's too harsh breeds resentment and pushback. The right line is always: what consequence actually changes the behavior, without creating a worse problem?

Reflection

Where in your relationships or leadership are you failing to hold consequences because it is easier to overlook violations? What is that costing in the long run?

Today's Practice

Identify one boundary that has been violated repeatedly with no consequence. Name the consequence you will apply next time — and commit to applying it.
